This exhibition brings together new works ranging from two-dimensional to sculptural forms.
Cavaniglia uses mirror, transparent and reflective materials to cast reflections around the gallery implicating the viewer, who caught in the reflections becomes part of the work. The materials don't simply present a standard reflection, instead, being subtly angled, cut and tilted, they create mild visual illusions that unsettle and confuse our perception of space.
Reflections are not where they are expected and we find our image in the surface next to us rather than the one we are facing. These disruptions of a visual trajectory propel the viewer through the space of the gallery to try and locate a logical perspective. The work creates gaps, or transitions between one space and another.
Whilst she's in Perth, Cavaniglia has also been commissioned to create an artwork for the City of Perth Winter Arts Festival.
Consuelo Cavaniglia graduated with a BA from the University of WA in 1993 and went on to study at Curtin University, graduating with Honours in 2002. She was selected for the prestigious Hatched National Graduate Show the following year. This year she completed her Masters of Fine Art at Sydney College of the Arts. Her artworks are held in the collections of the Art Gallery of WA, Wesfarmers Arts, Murdoch University and Kerry Stokes. Cavaniglia is also a highly respected independent art curator. This project is supported by the State Government through the Department of Culture and the Arts.
