SPRING 2009 NEWS
TURNER TURNS TEN!
On the 22 October 1999 The Church Gallery opened its doors in Claremont, with an exhibition featuring some of Perth’s leading artists in The Sir Charles Gairdner Art Award. Since then the gallery has introduced a successful residency programme, along with its popular Art Angels support group, and continued to show exhibitions that provoke and stimulate. In 2006 The Church Gallery moved to temporary premises in Northbridge and in March 2007 opened in new premises as Turner Galleries. WINTER 2009 NEWS
Paul Caporn’s exhibition catalogue is still available at Turner Galleries. If you missed his knock-out show, do come in and pick one up, they are free, courtesy the DCA who helped fund his exhibition.
Graham Miller has had an exciting six months with much international exposure. In December 2008 he was nominated as one of the finalists in Critical Mass. Critical Mass is an annual online program created by Photolucida. Photographers at any level, from anywhere in the world, submit portfolios for review. Through a pre-screening process, the field is narrowed to a select group of 175 Finalists who go on to have their work reviewed and voted on by over 200 esteemed international photography professionals. The top 50 are named and have their work featured on the Photolucida website: www.photolucida.org
Graham was in the top six finalists. Graham was then nominated for the Santa Fe Prize for Photography, the Leopold Godowsky Jr Photography Awards and the Review Santa Fe earlier this year.
He currently has work included in Transient States at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery UWA, (as has Rebecca Dagnall) and is also the current Critic’s Pick (by critic Andy Adams) at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester Massachusetts.
Graham’s photographs are available through Turner Galleries. There are still images available from the very successful Suburban Splendour series, although Frank has now sold out (but can be found in the collections of Edith Cowan University and the National Gallery of Victoria). View his works from this series, with prices and availability in the gallery stockroom. Other works can be viewed on Graham’s own website: www.grahammiller.com.au. Last year Graham was featured in the opening pages of the wonderful photographic book Hijacked, edited by Mark McPherson and Max Pam. Copies are for sale at Turner Galleries. Ask staff to view this impressive publication.
Matthew Hunt is another extremely busy artist, with four shows over four months. He currently has work in a two person show with Diane Tanzer Gallery, who now represents him in Melbourne. New work will be on display in the Entry Room of Turner Galleries from 26 June to 25 July 2009. Upcoming group exhibitions include Making it New: Focus on Contemporary Australian Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and Persuasion Equation at the Linden Contemporary Arts Centre in St Kilda, Melbourne.
Olga Cironis has had work from her Handle me gently series selected for the exhibition Turbulent Terrain: Manifestations of the sublime in contemporary art at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in September and touring to the Shepparton Art Gallery and the Hamilton Art Gallery in 2010.
