Trevor Richards' exhibition of new paintings is the third in a series of shows held at Turner Galleries since 2009 that explore pattern and architecture.
His recent European travels, including a two month residency in Paris, have continued to fuel this interest. He is intrigued by the interconnectedness of pattern, architecture and history. During his travels he photographed and sketched the geometric patterns he discovered on walls, ceilings and floors, which then became the basis for this new series of paintings.
Trevor stated that, "My interest in patterns is driven by their ubiquitous yet elusive qualities. Seen in everyday contexts they make sense as decorative devices, yet isolated and presented for scrutiny on a gallery wall they shift and dance before our eyes, foreground and background change places and negative areas become positive. They are the product of the human imagination, an authentic depiction of the concept of endlessness. The power of the pattern is grounded in repetition, at first tiresome to the mind but then fascinating as the rhythm takes hold.
These works aren't pictures or even abstractions, they retain their autonomy, yet are a record of my movements to different locations, so they can be interpreted as the documentation of a specific place. These patterns have been standardised by colour and structure and operate as an inventory of samples."
Also showing with the pattern based works are paintings which point in a different direction. They depart from hard edge abstraction and have beautifully 'feathered' or 'swept' surfaces. These looser works, such as Blur, are connected to the sensation of moving through light, sound and space at a speed where it is difficult to focus, being only aware of something unformed at the periphery of the senses.
Also included with these works are hybrids and combinations of these two approaches. Linear, geometric forms have been painted over the top of the literally 'swept' surfaces, floating above and grounding the movement below.
Trevor Richards has been exhibiting professionally for over 30 years in Perth. During that time his art practice has grown to include painting, sculpture, assemblage work, architectural interventions and wall / window based installations. He has exhibited across Australia and internationally. In 2008 he was included in CANOA, a large touring exhibition of Australian non-objective artworks that was shown in three venues in Germany. Trevor's work has been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of WA, Artbank, University of WA, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, BankWest, Royal Perth Hospital, Australian Capital Equity, Daimler Chrylser Collection (Berlin), Bank Sparkasse Osnabruck (Germany) and several more corporate and private collections.
Trevor Richards most recent commission was the painting of the facade of Turner Galleries as part of PUBLIC, a street art festival initiated by FORM, in April 2014.
