Turner Galleries are extremely pleased to welcome back to Perth, Adelaide artists Angela Valamanesh and Hossein Valamanesh. Angela is our first artist in residence for 2018, proudly presented by the Turner Galleries Art Angels and North Metropolitan TAFE.
She will be accompanied by her husband, Hossein, who will be exhibiting a video work in our Engine Room 1. Both artists are highly respected, and have held numerous national and international exhibitions. Their artworks can be found in public collections around the world. In our Engine Room 2 we will be presenting a much anticipated exhibition of recent work by local artist Andrew Nicholls.
In many ways the title of Angela Valamanesh's exhibition, The space between, can be applied to all three exhibitions. For her "the space between could refer to the method of teaching drawing, painting and sculpture where both positive and negative space or the space between objects is given equal consideration in a composition. Or the space between us all, as individuals. It could also relate to the composition of matter when viewed through an electron microscope and the notion in quantum physics where most of matter is space."
For several years Angela's artworks have been created from unglazed ceramic, focussing on forms based on anatomical and botanical drawings made with the aid of early microscopes. Her practice has recently evolved to include a broader engagement with materials, including works on paper and board using collage, fabrics, and paint and glazes on her ceramics. Botanical illustrations of orchids and insects now play an important role, especially the seductive connection between the two. She stated, "My recent works consist of simple forms that often make links between plant, human and animal. I am interested in imagery that is ambiguous, that has a certain familiarity to but is not completely or easily recognisable."
Angela's artworks are the result of deep research, something that residency projects enable her to carry out. In 2014 she was in residence at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, and in 2010 she undertook a residency with the Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of Adelaide, which resulted in the evolution and creation of her Insect / Orchid series of ceramics. In Perth she hopes to research local bee pollen colours.
Angela Valamanesh was born in Port Pirie, South Australia in 1953. She attended the South Australian School of Art, completing a Diploma in Design in 1977, Masters of Visual Arts in 1993 and was awarded a PhD from the University of South Australia in 2012. Angela has won several awards over the years and her artworks can be found in significant collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of SA and Artbank.
