Jacobus Capone has rapidly earned himself a reputation for creating performative artworks that explore extreme endurance whilst deeply engaging with the landscape.

Early projects have included énoncé 2006, in which he ceased talking for six months, and To love 2007, where he crossed Australia by foot, to pour water from the Indian Ocean into the Pacific. As his projects became more sophisticated, so did the recording of them, resulting in the mesmerising multi-screen Dark Learning 2015, exhibited at PS Artspace, and Forgiving Night for Day 2017 at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (as part of the Perth International Arts Festival). He has also been included in significant exhibitions that showcase emerging talent, such as Primavera 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney & New16 at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art Melbourne.

His latest offering has encompassed three journeys over two years, a poetic yet futile expedition which unfolded across two islands on opposite sides of the globe. This three-part pilgrimage sought to mourn Tasmania's once glaciated landscape and juxtapose it with Svalbard's currently active glacial environment. Enshrined with a sense of dark optimism, hopelessness and hope functioned as the projects warp and weft, with a poignant gesture guiding the endeavour. Water was taken from an undisclosed glacial lake in the highlands of Tasmania, reduced to a drop, sealed and carried to 78 degrees north in the Arctic. This sample of water was then taken to the depths of an unnamed ice cave within an active glacier. Here it froze and was left to remain. A portion of ice from the same cave was collected, reduced to a drop, sealed and carried back to Tasmania where it was released into the glacial lake where the process began.

The resultant body of work, Passage 2018, is comprised of paintings, prints and five 10 channel synchronised videos, and showcases parts of the delicate exchange between both islands. It is a series of holistic binary actions exploring ecological grief and geological time that unfolded at specific locations and elevations.

Jacobus Capone studied at Edith Cowan University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2007. His work can be found in the collections of the University of Queensland Art Museum and Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery UWA.
