the yok + Sheryo

The Yok and Sheryo are an accomplished duo who inject their street art style sensibilities into sophisticated artworks. The Yok helped pioneer the Perth street art movement before moving to Africa and South East Asia to explore ideas and new cultures. Sheryo hails from Singapore and, having started as a street artist in 2005 has subsequently emerged as one of Singapore's top street artists. The pair experiment with ancient artisan techniques from lost eras and remix them with their bold styles, their inspirations usually come from their vast travels, to create a beautiful cacophony of old and contemporary.

For their extraordinary exhibition at Turner Galleries Nasty Goreng, they explored the traditional world of Indonesian shadow puppet theatre, and adapted ancient techniques such as the traditional handicraft of batik (a method of patterning fabric using a wax-resist dyeing). The duo experiment with ancient artisan techniques from lost eras and remix them with their bold styles; a mash-up of tattoo designs, comic illustrations, skate and surf motifs, creating a beautiful cacophony of old and contemporary.

The Yok and Sheryo have been living and working collaboratively in New York since 2011, and have been painting their way up the burgeoning New York street art scene to become listed as some of the top street artists to watch.
